Sun Yuheng, male, a member of the Communist Party of China, was born in May 2002. He is a 2020-level undergraduate student majoring in Marine Engineering at the School of Naval Architecture, Ocean and Energy Power Engineering. He has served as Minister of the College’s Innovation and Entrepreneurship Platform, Grade Leader of the 2020-level Marine Engineering major, and Assistant Class Advisor of Class Marine Engineering 2301. Having been recommended for admission to the School of Naval Architecture, Ocean and Civil Engineering at Shanghai Jiao Tong University for a master’s degree, he continues to pursue his dream of serving the nation through shipbuilding.

Bending Over to Seek Knowledge, Building Dreams in the Deep Blue
"To establish oneself, one must first focus on learning; to learn, one must base oneself on reading." Since enrollment, Sun Yuheng has maintained a positive attitude toward learning, adhering to a rigorous, steady, and rational approach, and constantly striving to improve his academic proficiency. He understands the importance of "never putting off till tomorrow what can be done today," so he sets clear daily learning tasks and completes them on time. This rigorous attitude has greatly enriched his knowledge reserve and earned him outstanding achievements: he ranks second in the grade in average GPA of compulsory courses, first in comprehensive evaluation, and has topped both the class GPA and comprehensive evaluation lists for three consecutive years. He has also won the National Scholarship for two consecutive years, the Excellence Scholarship for the 2022-2023 academic year, and honors such as "University Model Student" and "Outstanding Communist Youth League Member." These accomplishments stem from his dedication and diligence. Sun Yuheng says, "I am full of confidence in my future. I will continue to maintain this positive attitude toward learning, pursue excellence, and strive to realize my dreams."

"A single flower cannot adorn a beautiful spring; an individual’s progress is like fighting alone, but collective progress can move mountains and fill seas." On his journey of growth, Sun Yuheng does not "sprint alone" but leads a group in a "relay race," committed to driving collective progress. As the "pacemaker" of his class, he promoted the implementation of a study assistance group system, fostering a positive learning atmosphere and encouraging classmates to progress together. From classrooms to libraries, laboratories to dormitories, even after lights-out, he and his classmates are often seen studying by flashlight. "This positive learning atmosphere makes me feel fulfilled, and progressing with everyone brings me even more happiness," he says.

Beyond mastering in-class knowledge, he persists in exploring and expanding his intellectual horizons. Upon entering the university, Sun Yuheng joined the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Platform of the College’s Science and Technology Association. He actively communicated with his class advisor, faculty members, and senior students, and with their recommendations and guidance, he independently applied for and successfully completed a college-level independent innovation and entrepreneurship project. This successful attempt seemed to open the door to technological innovation for him. In the positive atmosphere of mutual encouragement and progress within the project team, Sun Yuheng further mastered powerful engineering software such as SolidWorks, MATLAB, and LabVIEW, laying a solid foundation for his future practical endeavors.
In the second semester of his sophomore year, while studying mechanics of materials, Sun Yuheng used its mechanical principles as a basis to successfully initiate a project and participate in the Transportation Science and Technology Competition. During preparations, he spent his days studying in the study room and sequestering himself in the laboratory, where he read papers, conducted simulation experiments, built prototypes, and even assembled motors with his team. Eventually, the team’s ship model successfully "launched" in the university’s experimental pool with stable performance, and the project stood out to win a national second prize. Additionally, as the leader, he presided over a national innovation training program, which was rated as an excellent provincial-level project, and led his team to win a national second prize in the National Marine Vehicle Design and Production Competition.

Grateful at Heart, Devoted to Public Welfare
Over the past three years, he has enthusiastically participated in volunteer services, accumulating more than 178 hours of service. Sun Yuheng says, "I firmly believe that through my small efforts, I can bring greater value to the campus and society."
In April 2021, Sun Yuheng had the honor of participating in the "Dream-Building Journey: A Search for Red Landmarks" volunteer activity for Young Pioneers in Wuchang District, Wuhan, where he provided detailed explanations of red scenic spots to children. Through this experience, he deeply realized the hard-won nature of a happy life and gained a deeper understanding of the historical significance of the red revolution.
"This spiritual impact inspired me to plant red seeds in the children’s hearts through vivid storytelling," Sun Yuheng says. "This subconscious empathy stems from my own deep understanding of the red revolution. As contemporary college students, staying true to our original aspirations and forging ahead is the best way to showcase ourselves. We not only inherit the spirit of the red revolution but also practice this tradition through concrete actions, demonstrating our demeanor in the new era."

"I want to bring knowledge back to my hometown and help more children in the mountains." During a summer trip home, Sun Yuheng learned that in Aba Prefecture, where mountains and rivers crisscross, most young and middle-aged people leave to work, leaving behind elderly residents and "left-behind children" in their growth stage. These children lack not only parental companionship but also access to basic education. Upon learning this, he promptly signed up for a teaching volunteer program at Maiwa Primary School in Aba Prefecture. During 15 days of teaching, he accompanied the children in simple classrooms, imparting knowledge and answering questions to the best of his ability. In his free time, he herded livestock and gathered firewood with them, experiencing the beauty of nature, while also learning life skills unavailable in cities from the children. He not only helped many impoverished left-behind children gain knowledge and joy but also formed deep friendships with them. Standing out among 65 volunteer teachers, he was awarded the title of "Excellent Teacher."
"Our generation has endured the SARS epidemic and faced the challenges of COVID-19." In November last year, when Yujiaotou Campus implemented temporary closed management, Sun Yuheng actively responded to the university’s epidemic prevention regulations, volunteering as a building volunteer. He served 1,064 student dormitories and 4,326 students to ensure "classes continue despite lockdowns, and learning continues despite dormitory confinement." He says, "This not only reflects the responsibility and dedication of young students from the School of Naval Architecture, Ocean and Energy Power Engineering but also demonstrates the unity of a nation and its firm resolve to combat the epidemic."

Cultural Arts and Sports Spirit
Sun Yuheng has a strong passion for music and sports, pursuing all-round development in morality, intelligence, physical fitness, aesthetics, and labor. He has won second and third prizes in the Chengdu Excellent Art Talents Competition, fully leveraging his artistic strengths. To improve his clarinet skills, he participated in grading exams by the Central Conservatory of Music and Sichuan Conservatory of Music, earning Level 7 and Level 10 certifications, respectively. Additionally, he has performed with symphony orchestras, playing classic works such as The Bat Overture.
Beyond clarinet, he is passionate about singing. He participated in the "Red Songs Praise the Party, Stride into a New Era" campus singing competition, blending red songs that celebrate the Party’s kindness and the nation’s prosperity with pop elements, and won third place.

"A sound body is the foundation of revolution." He firmly believes that proper physical exercise is essential for everyone. Playing basketball is his first choice to relieve stress; whenever he feels tired or overwhelmed, he turns to this sport.
He has participated in two college-level class basketball tournaments with his classmates. As a core member of the team, he fought side by side with his classmates, achieving top three finishes both times.

Forging Teams, Remembering Roots
In student work, Sun Yuheng served as Grade Leader for Party and League building for three consecutive years. With enthusiasm and a responsible attitude, he managed affairs between classes, the grade, and the Party branch, assisting in the development of 24 Party members, the confirmation of 83 probationary candidates, and 137 active Party members. As the grade’s employment assistant, he helped 57 classmates with postgraduate recommendation procedures and facilitated over 10 classmates in securing employment offers with enterprises.

This year, Sun Yuheng volunteered to be an assistant class advisor at the college and was appointed to Class Marine Engineering 2301, hoping to contribute his remaining energy at Wuhan University of Technology and help younger students progress through "mentorship." In the two months after freshmen enrollment, he collaborated with the class advisor to organize 4 class theme meetings and 2 study sharing sessions, effectively enhancing the new class’s cohesion and professional confidence. "I hope to enhance my self-worth through various roles and achieve a positive cycle of helping others and self-improvement," Sun Yuheng says.

"As an institution focusing on science, technology, and engineering education, Wuhan University of Technology has provided me with a platform for growth and development. Looking back on my three years here, the high-quality education from the university and college has equipped me with a solid professional foundation and honed my ability to explore, innovate, and act. In my view, postgraduate recommendation, Excellence Scholarships, national awards... these are not the focus; they are just milestones in my college journey. What matters is what I will do in the future. I say this to my past self and to the ‘you’ of the future. I hope to remain steadfast in my endeavors, move forward steadily, and contribute to the dream of a maritime power sailing courageously into the deep blue. I also hope that ‘you’ will aim high, stay grounded, and excel in your own fields," Sun Yuheng concludes.
